In this session we will discuss Cassandra from its earliest beginnings in a primordial soup of NoSQL databases. From this, Cassandra extracted some of the most advantageous properties and variations of all databases and distributed systems. Like a biological organism, the challenges it has faced in many ways has determined its evolutionary path. Through Cassandra's evolution a peculiar anatomy has developed. We will describe those anatomical pieces and how they function as a reaction to the environment in which Cassandra evolved. This talk will dive somewhat deeply into the technical problems that a distributed database like Cassandra faces, and how, technically those problems have been addressed. In particular, I will discuss some recent developments with Cassandra 3.0 including why and how they were implemented.
